Since I started to read about babies the term ‘growth spurt’ became more familiar. It was always in the middle of the books and in the articles that I was reading, but I must confess that I used to read a little bit about it and skip the rest. I thought it was just a myth.
Last week I experienced I real ‘Growth Spurt’, and that’s how I realized that it really happens.
Growth spurts occur at approximately 10 days, 3 weeks, 6 weeks, 12 weeks, 4 months and 6 months of your baby's life.
During these times, you will notice that your baby will be demanding additional feedings and becoming fussy, especially if you are breastfeeding. If you are breastfeeding, your baby may want to nurse longer and more frequently until your supply catches up. You may find yourself wondering if your breast milk supply is diminishing, be rest assured though, it is only temporary.
If you are bottle feeding, your baby may require more formula at each feed, or may require an extra bottle or two during the day, your baby will soon let you know when they're hungry. You may also find that your baby's sleep become disrupted during this time. . It is not recommended to wake the baby up and it is advised to feed them for as long as they wish.
It is recommended that mothers shouldn’t leave the house during these periods. In my case I had to go out a few times and my baby didn’t behave so bad. She actually slept more when we were out and demanded more when we were at home. She is now in a stage that she feeds 10 minutes each breast. Suddenly she started to feed for 20 minutes, then 25, and sometimes she went for 30 minutes in each breast. She is turning 3 months this week s I guess she went through the 12 weeks period of growth spurt.
It is very intense and I was exhausted. It took 48 hours to finish but after these 2 days I’ve noticed the difference on her. She is more alert and responsiveness to the world. Her sleeps patterns have also improved. She is staying more awake during the day and sleeping better at night. And she is also back to the 10 minutes of feeding.
Don’t panic if your baby wants to feed more than usual out of the blue. It doesn’t mean that she/he is back to that first week of life, things will only get better. This is an important period in their lives and it is essential for their growth and development.
